Unit 13 begins with an overview of pronunciation and phonology and their facets. First, intonation patterns within English are described and mapped out. These patterns vary based on the focus and grammar of a given sentence and can be described by an intonation line which changes throughout the sentence. The next section covers stress which differs from intonation in that stress is focused upon a specific syllable within a word while intonation is concerned with the tone pattern across a whole phrase or sentence. Unit 13 then goes on to describe stress patterns in English which vary based on word length as well as some grammatical phenomena such a compounding. Finally, Unit 13 covers the phonetic alphabet which is used to describe pronunciation precisely using a standardized alphabet system.
