I am a trained Reading Recovery teacher and Literacy interventionist, and I agree with many points made in this unit. With students who are native English speakers, I have always explicitly taught them about the reasons for reading. I think it sets a purpose for whatever texts or tasks they are given in a classroom. Pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts is CRITICAL for language acquisition. Many teachers don't understand the effort that must go into planning which words to teach and which books to use during instruction. These aren't things that can be randomly pulled off the shelf and used at the last minute. While this unit was short, I found it valuable and meaningful.
