The receptive skills are listening and reading, because learners do not need to produce language to do these, they receive and understand it. These skills are sometimes known as passive skills. They can be contrasted with the productive or active skills of speaking and writing. We can divide reasons and motives for reading and listening into 2 categories: for a purpose and for an entertainment. I have learnt about reading skills. Skimming and scanning are very important reading techniques. Skimming refers to looking through material quickly to gather a general sense of the ideas, information, or topic itself. Scanning refers to reading through material to find specific information. When you scan, you run your eyes over text or information to pull out specific words. Students are very often encouraged to use the title of the text, or any accompanying pictures to make predictions about the content. Sometimes we read to get detailed information and sometimes we need to be able to deduce the meaning of individual words or phrases from the context in which we hear/read them.
