This unit was about what kinds of materials can be used in the classroom and what effects each kind has. As always, teachers have to find a balance between using authentic materials, created materials, and coursebooks in relation to the kind of class and students they are teaching. Authentic materials are interesting because they are about real topics and are relevant to the current time. Created materials and coursebooks are necessary because they are adjusted to and created for English language learners; the difference being created materials are tailored more for the specific lesson and class than coursebooks are. An effective teacher would supplement coursebooks with created materials and, when or if applicable, authentic materials. This kind of balance would be extremely beneficial for the English language learner.
