The two receptive skills are "reading" and "listening." When learning receptive skills, both are equally as important. Quickly reading through a scientific report would be an example of "skimming" the content. "Scanning" skills are those which include: reading your horoscope to find your "star sign." Pre-teaching difficult language would not be a good example of engaging the students with receptive skills.
