Phrasal verbs are difficult for the student, as these must be learned like new words, that is memorized case by case. If the students do not know the right expression, they might choose to say things as they would by their native language. Modals and the use of passive voice are more easy to learn, as these go about the same in the foreign languages. I find ITTT grammar units very useful, because teacher must understand the terms, and be able to explain how the language works, and also to understand what is the real challenge for a student to learn new language. Learning grammar is hard work, not fun, and it should be kept on the background where possible.
