This unit highlights the role, pros and cons of course books in the classroom. I understand that they provide a broad strokes approach to teaching that is not always relevant or interesting to individual students. However, as a novice teacher I very much hope to be working with one. The graded language, the syllabus, the activities, and progression seem like critical aids to the teacher. Having a course book can allow freshman teachers to focus on the language points and students at the beginning, until he/she can suss out the nuances of what level each student is at currently. With experience in the classroom and rapport with the students the omit/replace/supplement/adapt strategy will become more common. I think.
