To get students speaking the teacher should choose a topic that is both interesting and on the level of the students' language capabilities. An interesting topic alone is not sufficient to create a successful lesson if the students are interested but incapable of expressing their ideas. One way to troubleshoot this issue, should it arise, is to elicit pertinent vocabulary and perhaps use board work to show example structure.

Though not necessary, it could be wise to encourage improvement since handwriting does make an effect on the reader. However, with computers and spellcheck software, writing might be less of an area of focus than speaking, reading, and listening.
