Chicopee, Massachusetts TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit presents how to manage classes with regard to the teacher's body, the arrangement of the class, and the types of activity work available to the teacher. It is important to reduce Teacher Talk Time (TTT) because Student Talk Time (STT) is more important for developing real skills and proficiency in language systems. Moreover, listening skills can be developed from listening to classmates as well as the teacher. The teacher is the model for native-English usage, but his/her talk time during instructions, monitoring, and tutoring is sufficient to model the language. It is more important that students activate and experiment with what they know. The teacher can reduce TTT through manipulation of voice, gestures, and eye contact.
The unit also looks at arranging students which will depend on class age, size, and culture. The horseshoe arrangement seems best to me for its adaptability. It allows for teacher-centered lessons as well as pairwork and group learning. Small groups clustered in desks can be a good arrangement, too, because it allows for high student-to-student interaction and more intimate discussions.
As a trainee teacher classroom discipline is a concern of mine. I'm not convinced theoretical knowledge will be that helpful, but I will try to remember to address problems immediately, use respect and humor to reduce tension, speak to the student after class, and/or report chronic misbehavior to a superior.
