Chester, Massachusetts TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covers various methods of language teaching and highlights the pros and cons of each. Many seem to have come from the 60s and 70s and are couched in psychoanalysis (suggestopaedia, the silent way) which I don't understand. I do recognize the importance of making students feel relaxed and comfortable, however. The communicative and lexical approaches strike me as integral for attaining fluency though they are not sufficient to ensure accuracy. I think audio-lingualism is excellent for acclimating new learners to the sounds of English.
The ESA method is simple and effective. However, because it is formulaic it is important for the teacher to mix things up (straight arrow, boomerang, patchwork) so the students don't lose interest or motivation. I learned that the engage and activate phases encourage high student talk time and focus on fluency. The study phase allows for more teacher talk time, guidance/tutoring, and correction. When correcting students (which should generally only happen in the study phase) the teacher should remain positive and encouraging.
