Writing and speaking are known as the productive skills in learning a new language. The majority of students prefer to focus on their speaking skills which often leads to writing being neglected in the teaching process but this is an equally important skill that teachers need to ensure they are working on in the classroom. The main writing skills teachers should be concerned with are spelling and punctuation but handwriting is also something that should be looked at especially with students whose native language uses a different alphabet. With speaking, there is a difference between focusing on fluency and accuracy and there needs to be a balance between these in the teaching process. Accuracy is more concerned with correct pronunciation and use of grammar while fluency is more about the ability of a student to speak freely without thinking. Accuracy should be dealt with in the study phase of a lesson with activities such as drilling and prompting and fluency in the activate stage with activities such as free role play, discussions and story telling.
