Teaching pronunciation of words in English can be very difficult due to the fact that it is not a phonetic language. This means that many words do not look how you would expect them to based on the letters in that word. English confuses students with words that sound alike but are spelled very differently and likewise with words that are spelled the same but pronounced entirely different and with different meanings. The phonemic alphabet, when used in the right way, is a tool that teachers can use to help students learn how to pronounce words correctly. Some other aspects of pronunciation are to do with using stresses and intonation in sentences to convey meaning.
