Unit 9 explains in detail how and why planning lessons is so important. Considering various reasons and following important functions while writing lessons plans, we create a record of what we will have taught using a work document prepared both for ourselves or in case of a substitution.
Lesson planning helps to follow a logical sequence of stages and to keep on target during the lessons in order not to waste time. However, it's suggested to be flexible responding to the needs of the class.
To make a lesson plan, we should write the following information:
1. teacher's name, date/time of lesson
2. class's level, room number, amount of students
3. what the lesson will include (ex. present simple)
4. needed material's list
5. the teacher's aspirations for the students during the lesson
(for example, the students should be able to.... )
6. the teacher's self-growth targets for improvement
7. anticipated difficulties the students might have or obstacles that the teacher might face and their possible solutions
After filling in the form with the above details, we continue the lesson plan by writing a procedure which consists in a list of activities following on of the ESA formats (straight-arrow, boomerang or patchwork).
The teacher decides a time frame and also considers which is the best way to interact with the students in each step of the lesson (student-teacher, student-student, teacher-student).
The Unit continues explaining that there are also three other important aspects to be considered to have a complete study phase in your lesson. D.E.GO is the acronym of the process where the teacher 'Demonstrates' the activities, 'Elicits' correct answers from the students and 'Gives Out' materials referring to the activities.
With this process, the teacher can monitor the students without interrupting their activities and will also be able to give feedback by observing the students from a distance and making notes of their progress and common errors.
Seeing as I have some teaching experience, I found this unit interesting and very useful because it made it clear to me how important it is to prepare lesson plans as a means of improving my skills.
