Mount Vernon, Maryland TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Unit three covered the topic of course development, in relation to teaching business English. It began by covering the importance of how to prepare and plan the course, such as giving placement tests, doing a needs analysis, and using that information to create leveled groups and syllabi. I have been provided a helpful review of typical student ability levels and a sample of what a level test should look like to determine how to group students. It also provided a helpful sample needs analysis specifically related to business English, demonstrating the importance of understanding how English will be used via the four skills in an office setting. Knowing whether the students need to focus on learning how to write emails or how to give presentations can affect the syllabus creation, so a comprehensive needs analysis should be used. The unit then gave a simplified break down of the different types of syllabi, as well as how exactly one could be made and what it would look like when completed. I found it very helpful to see the process used to create a business English syllabus, including how to determine what to teach, how to break up the hours around important grammar and vocabulary, and how to put it all together on paper. Unit three concluded with the topics of course assessment, examinations, and evaluations. I found the final portions of the unit to be useful review of these topics, since I briefly studied them in both the CTEYL and TEFL courses. However, the business exams section was different by focusing more on some business English specific exams, as well as explaining why these exams are very important to the test taker for evaluation and career advancement.
