According to this unit, the choice of whether or not to use a course book, and if so, which one, can be quite a complex issue. For many students, materials created by the teacher are more interesting, more relevant and a welcome change from the course book. Because any authentic materials are not designed for the EFL student, they are not graded for level. Therefore, teachers should select carefully and must also decide what students do with the material. Teachers must also pay attention to four different options for course book use; Omit, whereby a teacher omits lessons that are irrelevant and/or not beneficial to students; Replace, whereby the teacher chooses to replace unsuitable material with more appropriate material; Supplement, whereby a teacher adds extra material to the course book to reinforce language point; Adapt, whereby the teacher uses the same basic materials but in his/her own way and style.
