I have learned the different parts of speech:
1. Nouns: parts of speech that names persons, places or things.
Types of nouns- common nouns ex. dog, car
compound nouns ex. toothbrush, football
abstract nouns ex. hope, pride
collective nouns ex. pack, hive
Plural nouns- a word that indicates there is more than one person, animal, place or thing
ex. cats, cars, buildings, buses, teeth
Countable nouns- People creatures and things that can be counted
ex. chairs, birds, guitars
Uncountable nouns- Nouns that can't be counted
ex. passion, honor, dignity, justice
2. Adjectives: A word that describes and clarifies a noun
ex. big, dirty, kind
Comparative adjectives- used to compare differences beteween two objects
ex. faster, smoother
Superlative adjectives - used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit
of a quality. ex largest, smallest, fastest, slowest
3.Articles: words that describe a noun as specific or unspecific
Definite Article: the article 'the' is used to refer to a particular member of a
group or class ex. (The) elephants know the quickest way to the
river.
Indefinite Articles: 'A' and 'an' indictaes that the noun modified is indefinite,
referring to any member of group.
ex. A truck (a+ singular noun beginning with a consonant)
An eagle (an+ singular noun beginning with a vowel
A uniform (a+ singular noun beginning with a consonant sound)
4.Vebs: a word used to describe an action, state or occurrence
Transitive verbs-a verb that is directly followed by an object
ex. She broke the plate.
Intransitive verbs- a verb that cannotbe followed directly by an object
ex. The rock fell.
Infinitives- the basic form of a verb
ex. to eat, to dance (formed by preceding the base form of a verb with to)
5. Adverbs: a word that modifies an adjective, verb or other adverbs
Manner- ex.quickly, calmly
Place - there, below
Time - soon, later
Degree - very, much
Frequency- usually, rarely
6. Gerunds: a verb that function as a noun (ending in -ing)
ex. (Singing) is my favorite hobby.
7. Pronouns: a word or a phrase that is used as a substitution for a noun or a noun phrase
Personal pronoun- ex. I,me, him
Possessive pronoun- ex. mine, hers, theirs
Reflexive pronoun- ex. myself, himself, themselves
Relative pronoun- ex. The house (that) i will buy will be beautiful.
8. Prepositions: a word that tells you where or when something is in relation to something else.
Time- ex. at, on, by, before, until, after
Place- ex. in, at, on,by above, beside, near
Movement- ex from, into, onto, through
9. Conjunctions: a word used to connect clauses or sentences
ex. but, and, yet, or, because, although, nor, since, while
