Teaching new language involves introducing new vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as teaching language functions. Introducing new vocabulary is particularly important at the early stages of learning a new language. When selecting which vocabulary to teach, there are no general rules regarding what is most suitable to which level as there is with grammatical structures. When selecting which vocabulary to introduce, teachers should consider things such as how appropriate this language is to the particular student/students and how often this vocabulary is used. ESA straight arrow lessons are often well suited to teaching new vocabulary. Introducing new grammatical structures is more determined by the level of the class as some grammatical structures would be far too advanced for a beginner class. Teaching language functions such as inviting, agreeing, refusing, suggesting etc is also an important aspect of teaching new language. Teaching functions typically requires a lot more activation of the new language so is well suited to using a boomerang or patchwork ESA lesson plan.
