While there is some debate as to whether lesson planning is a good idea, used in the correct manner it can be a good tool for teachers to ensure their classes are as effective as possible. It is particularly important for inexperienced teachers at the beginning of their teaching career. A lesson plan should not be completely fixed and rigid- there needs to be some flexibility built into the plan to allow the teacher to make changes as they feel is necessary during the class. For example, if the students are finding a particular new language point especially difficult, you might need to spend more time working on drilling or activities in the study phase before moving onto activate. The plan should be written out clearly and simply and a copy taken to the class so the teacher can easily refer back to it. Some of the sections that should be included in the plan are learner/teacher objectives, anticipated problems, language point to focus on, what teaching aids will be required, procedure, and timing. After completing the lesson, it is always a good idea to conduct a self evaluation to determine how effective the class was and what areas need improving.
