Fairlee, Maryland TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
There have been many different methods of teaching English as a foreign language, ranging from natural to nurturing and direct to indirect.
The Classic Method has been used since the 1700's and it involves grammar translation from the learners native language (L1) to the target language (L2).It isn't a natural method but is very common.
The goal of later methods was to create more direct, natural teaching styles using the idea that 'if we want to learn a language we should create the circumstances in which we learn our native language'.
Here are the methods mentioned:
1. Audio-Lingualism (Army Method) : long - repetition drills
2. The Silent Way : The students 'discover'. The teacher stays silent and uses Cuisinare rods.
3. Lexical Approach: Words and phrases are more important for language learning than grammar.
4. Suggestopedia: Creation of a safe environment to diminish all of the internal and external distractions that can create a barrier in the learning process.
5. Total Physical Response: Involves both verbal participation and physical movement.
6. ESA- consists of all of the positive aspects of the other methods and is separated into three phases:
Engage - It's always the first phase of the lesson and encourages the students to start talking and thinking in English .
Study - The teacher elicits the lesson point from students, covers gaps in knowledge and checks understanding.
Activate- The teacher suggests activities which give the students the possibility to use their previous language knowledge and practice acquired skills.
The Unit has been truly interesting. I am discovering a new world of language and I'm looking forward to practicing and applying the methods mentioned in this Unit.
