Many different teaching methodologies have been developed throughout history and used to teach English as a foreign language. All of these methodologies have different positive and negative aspects with some being better suited to higher or lower level students. The ESA method is focused on in this course as it can be used from beginners right up to upper intermediate and advanced. It also ensures that three basic requirements for learning a language are met- students are motivated, are exposed to the language and have an opportunity to use it. The ESA method stands for ENGAGE, STUDY, ACTIVATE. Each of these stages must be covered in the lesson and each has a specific purpose. The engage stage is designed to motivate students and get them talking and thinking in English. Games and communicative activities are typically utilised in this stage. The study phase focuses on learning something new about the language, for example the focus might be learning a new verb or a particular sound. The teacher will typically present the information during this stage then work on exercises with the class to ensure the students understand. Finally, the activate stage focuses on the students using the new language learned plus any other language they may knowledge of in a free and flexible way. Role plays and debates may be a part of this stage.
