Materials for lessons can include coursebooks as well as authentic and created material. Each of these different types of materials have their advantages and disadvantages. Coursebooks are great for inexperienced teachers as they provide a well established and proven syllabus. Their downside though is that if relied upon too heavily, the classes can become boring to the students. Authentic material is anything that is created not specifically with students in mind, so for example newspaper articles, menus, magazines, brochures etc. These are a great resource to boost students confidence in using English in real life scenarios, however, they can often be too advanced for beginner students. Created materials are activities that the teacher creates specifically for the class, for example word searches, gap fills and crosswords. The benefit of created material is that teachers can ensure they are graded to the correct student level but their downside is that they often aren't as engaging for students as authentic materials are.
