Classroom management is an important skill that must be developed in order to become an effective ESL teacher. There are many different aspects to consider when developing this important skill. Knowing when and how to use eye contact, gestures and the voice is one of the core parts of this. By utilising these skills, you can encourage and maintain student interest in the class, reduce the need for teacher talk and encourage student participation and maintain discipline. Knowing when and how to group students is another important aspect of classroom management. Sometimes it will be necessary to have students work in pairs or groups whereas at other times, it will be most effective to have students work individually. Understanding the pros and cons of each type of grouping will help us to assess when each particular grouping is most important. The same goes for classroom arrangement. Seating the students in a horseshoe arrangement can be effective but is not always appropriate. A teacher should consider which arrangement is best before beginning a class. Lack of discipline in the classroom will decrease the effectiveness of teaching so it is important to maintain discipline in a fair and consistent way right from the beginning.
