Unit 11 points out that there are four basic skills in any language: reading and listening (which fall under receptive skills) and speaking and writing (which are categorized as productive skills). Although in lesson planning generally, the idea is to focus on one skill while incorporating the others to make an integrated lesson, Unit 11 focuses on the receptive skills: reading and listening. It covers topics such as motives and mechanisms, as well as how to incorporate these concepts into the ESA system.
I found it particularly useful that, in the discussion regarding language skills, cultural context was addressed (using the example of the football headline with the Cowboys versus the Bears). It added another level of understanding to be aware of when crafting lessons and, I think, helped emphasize that the lesson should be designed around the students and their interests and experiences, not those of the teacher.
