Over the years numerous methodologies for teaching second languages have been developed, with varying levels of popularity and use at different times. Recently the methodologies that have found most favour are those that try, in as much as is possible, to imitate the mechanisms used in natural language acquisition of native languages. The approach favoured by this course is based on the Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) paradigm which aims to utilise a variety of techniques in order to motivate students, expose them to the language and provide them the opportunity to use the language. The ESA paradigm is very flexible but the core principles are that lessons start with Engagement where students are encouraged to "get comfortable" talking and thinking English and warming up for the rest of the lesson. The "Study" portion is where particular lessons on construction or other linguistic fundamentals are covered (with more emphasis on accuracy than the other stages), starting with elicitation and ending with an activity, such as a worksheet, from which students' progress can be assessed and errors reviewed. ESA classes end with an "Activate" stage where students are assigned activities that allow them to apply the lessons learned in Study in a more natural way, focussing on fluency
