This unit is an overview of typical problems that teachers will experience and how to effectively cope with them. Some of these problems include large class sizes, unmotivated students, and class with varied language levels. It is important in each of these cases that the teacher strives to establish rapport with the students, making sure that they all feel respected and in a safe environment to make mistakes. With large classes, the main concern is keeping all students active in the learning during the lesson. The best way to solve this issue is to have students work in groups and pairs often, so they are forced to interact and contribute. If a student is not participating, it may be because of a lack of confidence or lack of interest. In either case it is the responsibility of the teacher to get students to enjoy learning and speaking English. Offer opportunities for students to record themselves privately and then bring for you to listen. Group work also may help these students feel more open to learning, especially if the group is with people of similar skill level. Overall, teachers need to take responsibility for every student and the problems that may arise. With guidance, redirection, and monitoring, these problems can be minimized and the amount of engaged learning time will therefore increase!
