I have learned how to prepare lessons for vocabulary, grammar and language functions using various forms of ESA lessons, such as straight arrow, boomerang and patchwork. In particular, writing my own lesson plans in the unit task was particularly helpful, as I got to think about these issues in a practical way. For example, I found it useful to consider how to create a patchwork lesson around the topic: checking into a hotel. I had to consider suitable engage activities (e.g. students talk in leisure about what makes a hotel "good" and what features this hotel has), study activities (read a conversation for someone checking into a hotel and note common phrases, etc.) and activate stages (groups make an advertisement for a good hotel, etc.) and then tie these ideas together in a patchwork method to best introduce the topic to students and not make things redundant.
