Although pronunciation varies depending on situation and mood, the argument that this reality negates a system of standardization is untrue. This Unit dissects English pronunciation and into a general overview of basic concepts the student can expand upon independently and with practice. Different elements of phonology and teaching techniques are discussed.
As a foreign language student of Arabic, pronunciation and phonology were particularly difficult due to the great variance of sounds from one language to another. It wasn’t until I was living in the Middle East that I was forced to grasp (sometimes unconsciously) essential differences in speech. I appreciated this unit because it gives some useful advice for how to prevent the challenges I experienced from happening to others. As a result, student confidence is elevated and that encourages greater risk taking in language.
