The final unit of the course addresses some of the most common problem encountered by teachers in the classroom. First lessons are naturally intimidating to some novice instructors, and should be used as an opportunity to establish rapport and gain an understanding of the needs and abilities of the students, rather than a conventional instruction period. In some cases, students in a class may be at different levels of language proficiency. This may be dealt with by assigning stronger students more challenging assignments based on the same material, or potentially by pairing weaker students with stronger students for pair work to give stronger students the additional and enriching task of peer mentoring. Worksheets, group activities, and choral repetition are all especially helpful for working with larger classes. It is important to remember to avoid the students' native language whenever possible, and not to neglect listening skills- even when the students struggle with understanding recordings. For reluctant students, warm up exercises are a great way to encourage participation.
