As a new teacher, I am most anxious as to how to approach the classes I'm presented to teach - how will they interact with me/each other? How can I establish a rapport with them to make them feel at ease so they ae receptive to learning a new language? At what level are the students at in their studies? There are so many things to think about and consider when going forward with teaching a class, especially whenestablishing where everyone stands for the first time. This is quite nervewracking. I want to learn to be comfortable with using 'warmers' such as pictionary and hangman to be able to break the ice with the students. In terms of differeing levels, I hope to come up with various activities and materials that can help gauge where the students are at.
If students revert to using their native language, I will need to get creative as I do not speak their language fluently but need to encourage them to speak in English even if they are shy/do not understand.I will not discourage their use of native language, but will only speak and answer in English to emphasize speaking and learning. When it comes to reluctant students, I hope to use pair work and fun role-playing to get students interacting and more interested in participating.
