Again, this was a simple unit. The need for students to take different types of tests depends on the exact stage the students are at. Students starting an ESL course would need to take a placement test to know what kind of studies it would be most beneficial for them to undertake. Diagnostic and progress tests should be carried out by teachers to see the students’ progress, identify areas that need more attention and instill a sense of confidence and progress in the students. Finally, practice tests can be run to help students prepare for external exams and help the students identify how close they are to their goals. It was interesting for me to review the different types of international English examinations, especially the differences between the lower-level examinations such as the KET and the PET, as well as to find out about the Trinity College London ESOL Skills for Life exam.
