The four forms of Past tenses are used to communicate different past temporal relationships and states. Although instinctive to a native speaker these differences can be completely new concepts to students whose first language has no equivalent structure. Broadly speaking the Past Simple and Past Perfect tend to be used for actions that were completed in the past (e.g "I ate" or "I had eaten") whereas the Past Continuous and Past Perfect Continuous are generally used to refer to things that were ongoing in the past (e.g "I was eating" or "I had been eating").
