For the first class, establishing the right atmosphere and good rapport with / among students is more important than learning new language content. I reckon class survey in one of the best options to get learners together and break the ice. The teacher can start off by introducing him/herself and making students ask personal type questions putting most popular on the whiteboard. Then the teacher asks students to report back what they have learnt. A listening exercise of the same kind can follow. This can be followed by the class survey when students, with their name tags on, walk around the classroom finding out their peer personal information which can later be presented for everybody in a variety of ways. As to the assessment test, it can become the last phase of the lesson.
