In addition to what we have learnt in the previous sections, we have gone through the teaching techniques for adult students. This unit looks at more specialized groups, such as beginners, individual students, children and English learner for specific purpose, which may require different skills to meet their different needs. First, it says that the ‘beginner’ can be classified into 5 categories, which are the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner and the beginner without Roman alphabet. Different methodologies and techniques can be applied for beginners at different levels. It also mentions that teaching children is the most rewarding of all student class to teach due to its “curiosity” factor or motivation factor. Teachers are required to keep the lesson fun enough and always show signs of appreciation for what they are doing. Business English learner as a special group might not be well motivated to study English since a number of them will have been “required” to learn. The teachers is better to give clients a “needs analysis” in the form of a written questionnaire before the class and plan the course in accordance with what they need. After studying this unit, I understand that different groups of students need different attentions, tailored teaching methodologies and varied materials and evaluations.
