This was an interesting and complex unit for me, as I have never previously studied the full formal overview of all the conditional tenses, though they come to me relatively naturally. It was interesting to study about the zero, first, second and third conditionals. The zero conditional can be used to express certain facts (if you boil water, you get steam). The first conditional is used to talk about potential future situations (if I go to bed early, I’ll get enough sleep). The second conditional can be used to talk about unreal future situations (If I had more time, I could continue with my studies) and the third conditional is used to talk about hypothetical past actions and their hypothetical consequences (If I had studied geology I would have moved to the Middle East.) Finally, it was interesting to look at ways direct and indirect speech may be conveyed. The different activities that can be used to teach these concepts were also interesting, such as use of intermediaries to teach indirect speech and different hypothetical role-plays such as the “nuclear shelter” activity sound very interesting to try out in class.
