This unit reviewed the differences between authentic and created materials for lesson plans, while also discussing usage of course books and the advantages and disadvantages of using these. Many of the points in these sections felt very true and relevant for me, but the most useful part of the lesson was creating a lesson plan that includes authentic reading material, as instructed in the unit review. For my lesson plan, I used a fairly difficult piece of writing from The Guardian that discussed holiday shopping and the importance of being on top of your Christmas preparations. The lesson I structured around this piece of writing involved students discussing how to prepare for holidays, prep work and group work for understanding this reading, and then finally an activate phase where students have to work in groups to discuss common preparations and shopping required for (different) holidays in their home country. From creating this lesson plan, I was able to see how enjoyable it can be to incorporate authentic material into a lesson plan, although it is difficult to know if the chosen piece may be too difficult for the students without actually knowing the class.
