I learned about the various usages of modal auxiliary verbs, phrasal verbs, the passive and active voice, and clauses in this unit. More importantly, I learned about effective methodologies for teaching some of these trickier subjects of the English language. For example, I learned that engaging exercises for teaching about modal verbs could include role play ("you should take these tablets") or rules for an establishment ("you can't have over night guests"). As usual, the task sheet forced me to be creative in thinking about how I can best teach some of these subjects. For example, I had to consider various sentences with modal verbs and think of activate stage activities that could go along with the sentences. One idea I had was story building for one of the sentences, where students would work in pairs to elaborate on the context of one of the sentences, and students would then present their stories and the most creative story would be rewarded in some way.
