While the previous unit examined receptive skills, Unit 12 identifies the importance of productive skills: speaking and writing. Although both are used in very different ways, the end goal of productive skills is the same: to communicate. Motivations for communicating, how to integrate productive skills into ESA lesson plans and assessing different levels of fluency are discussed. A section devoted to writing skills looks specifically at details around spelling, vocab, handwriting, and other areas that differentiate it from speaking.
I found it relevant when it was mentioned that writing is likely the most neglected skill in the TEFL world since class time is often devoted to speaking skills, and homework more often designated for writing. However, since homework is often neglected (depending on the culture), this skill may not be developed to the extent it should be. Hence, this realization made me aware that it may be necessary to involve writing skills during class time in creative ways that allow those skills to be developed, without necessarily sacrificing speaking time. I also appreciated the recognition that games can be a great learning tool for language as well as the suggestions provided.
