This was a very useful unit. It is true that a number of difficult situations can arise with some groups at one point or another due to large group sizes, students having mixed ability levels of English and resorting to their L1. Consequently, one needs to consider these possible issues and look for ways that they can be overcome. Some of the suggestions made in this unit were really good, like appointing group leaders for helping manage large classes, using warmers with students to help get them in the mood for English learning and making sure you clearly explain and demonstrate any instructions for group work to help the students avoid resorting to their L1. Also, it is important to remember to constantly downplay your own knowledge of the students’ L1 (if you have any), so as to encourage the students to communicate in English as much as is possible.
