Unit 9 discusses the balance between a more rigid teacher-forward versus a more flexible student-guided lesson plan and the importance of a structured lesson design for new teachers. Constructing a lesson plan serves three important functions: it provides an aid to planning the lesson (beginning, body, and conclusion), provides a reference as a working document, and serves as a record-keeping device for class content and material covered. Unit 3 was incorporated into this unit directly and served as a good resource when referring to the Engage, Study, and Activate phases.
This unit is a good reminder that, while there is always room for improvement and opportunities to evolve in teaching, as a green teacher, there will be a lot of new territory to cover. At times, it will seem overwhelming, but it’s worth recognizing that there are tools you can employ ahead of time so that you and the students are able to stay on track. Pay attention, take note of problem areas in the lesson plan as well as areas where things went well, and use the input to improve upon future lesson plans.
