This unit discusses the different types of groups and students that you may encounter besides adult learners. These groups include beginners (of various ages), children, one-on-one lessons, and adults learning business English. Each of these ability and age groups will require some different considerations and techniques for teaching. For example, children will require a greater variety and faster pace in activities because of shorter attention spans. Also children will feed off of your attitude, so it is very important for you to display consistent expectations and emotions with students. For one-on-one lessons, it is important to use authentic material and get students to write, read, and speak about topics that will help expand their vocabulary in "real-world" ways. While these students are highly motivated, you should not just treat these lessons as conversation time, but also have goals and measurable objectives so students are gaining skills they need, just as in class settings. Finally, when dealing with companies and clients that are learning business English, it is important to remember that you are an English expert, not an industry/business expert. Elicit vocabulary and content related to business as much as possible from students and use it to motivate them and make learning English relevant, but do not try to "show off" all of your knowledge of the business/industry of your clients. That is not your job. After reading this unit, I understand that it is my responsibility as a teacher to motivate all students to learn, measuring learning through objective means, and seek to balance instruction time between students needs and wants.
