Reading and Listening are vitally important skills that all language students need to develop but the type of material used should be appropriate to the level of the class. Exposure to written and spoken English is vital but it is important not to overwhelm students by providing material that is too advanced for students; this can be trickier when dealing with authentic materials so care should be taken to carefully select a piece of text or recording that is appropriate for the English level of the class and on a topic that will be of interest to the class. It can often be useful to pre-teach some new vocabulary before commencing a reading/listening task but care should be taken to still encourage students to develop the skills to manage material even if they do not know every word.
