Unit 20 is appropriately titled “Troubleshooting” and examines common problems that may present themselves in the classroom setting. Topics focused on include first lessons, warmer exercises, varying levels of fluency, large class sizes, the use of native language in class, students with a lack of enthusiasm for participation, and difficulties with respect to listening texts.
While each category presents its own set of challenges, I personally find the most difficult one to be a reluctant student. Where there are different techniques to refer to in tackling the other challenges mentioned, I find it to be more difficult to take a student who is unmotivated and make them excited about the material being taught. That being said, I’ve had professors that could have made me passionate about a class that explained how grass grows. This kind of student presents a challenge, but also an opportunity to reach someone in a way that can positively affect their life path while, simultaneously, helping me to find creative ways to better myself as a teacher.
