Modal auxiliary verbs add meaning to the main verb. They can express obligation, ability, permission, certainty, etc. Some of them are should, can, could, must, have to, among others. They can be taught by creating role plays, by establishing rules for a place or by guessing the meaning of signs.
Passive voice is used to focus attention in the action and not in the doer or if you don’t want to say who did something (or it is not important). You can teach it using quizzes and matching sentences (mix active and passive sentences).
As for relative clauses, there are three types: independent, dependent and relative. Relative clauses can be defining (the information given is essential to the meaning of the sentence e.g. this is the dress which my mother has made for me) and non-defining (the information is not essential, you can take out what is between commas e.g. London, which is the capital of England, is a very beautiful city).
Regarding the phrasal verbs, there are three types:
- Intransitive (can’t be followed by a direct object e.g. we have run out of eggs).
- Transitive separable (e.g. she wants to try the dress on/she wants to try on the dress).
- Transitive inseparable (e.g. She can’t put up with the students arriving late to class).
