Unit 18 covers the grammar topics modal auxiliary verb, passive voice and phrasal verbs. The first topic explains the basic rules of the modal verb. Modal verbs (will, should, would, shall, might, may, can, could and must) are used to express different ideas such as obligation, possibility, permission, ability and advice. Modal auxiliary verbs are interchangeable. It has been recommended when teaching modal verbs to select one modal verb e.g. ‘can’ and create sentences with different ideas such as expressing an ability, permission or a possibility etc. The second approach would be using one context, for example; giving an advice and use different modal verbs to explain the degree of formality. The second grammar topic in this unit illustrates how to form the passive from an active voice. Both voices have basically the same meaning, but the emphasis in the active voice lies on the subject, whereas in the passive voice, the object in the active voice becomes the subject. When converting an active voice to the passive voice, the tense remains the same. To form the passive form, the auxiliary verb ‘be’ + past particle need to be used. Last topic in this unit is about phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are a combination of more than one word normally with a preposition or an adverb which operates as one unit. An example would be ‘The car broke down’. Three basic types of phrasal verbs have been explained. Students may have difficulties with this topic. An option would be to learn the phrasal verb as a vocabulary item.
