This unit has taught me all the uses of the modal auxiliary verbs. They can be used to express a level of certainty, a level of doubt, obligation, formal/informal polite requests, formal/informal permission, suggestions, and ability. The next theme of the unit was learning the difference between the active and passive voice. In the active voice, the focus is on the agent. In the passive voice, the focus is on the subject and the agent is considered less important, or just does not appear. Regarding relative clauses, they are used as dependent clauses to help modify a noun. Finally, when talking about phrasal verbs we have to keep in mind that there are three different types: intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. Intransitive verbs cannot be followed by a direct object. Transitive separable verbs mean that an object pronoun can only come between the verb and the particle. An object noun can come either between the verb and the particle or after the particle. With transitive inseparable verbs, the object phrase or object pronoun both come after the particle. It also includes phrasal verbs that have two particles: an adverb followed by a preposition.
