As with the receptive skills of reading and listening, the productive skills of writing and speaking need to be an integral part of teaching the English language. Both are equally important and should be given devoted time in lessons. Each skill has its own unique challenges that an effective teacher must be aware of in order to help students meet those challenges and improve in their use of the productive skills. Writing is challenging in its need to be more accurate not only in word choice but also in spelling and punctuation. The benefit of writing is that students usually have more time to think through what they are going to say and do not need to worry about pronouncing words correctly. Speaking on the other hand focuses more on fluency. Decisions must be made relatively quickly when choosing words and forming sentences and pronunciation is an important factor. However, spelling and punctuation are no longer concerns. Developing both of these productive skills will allow students to gain confidence and efficacy in using the English language.
