The content of this unit covers all the different conditionals that exist in the English language. The zero conditional is you used when expressing facts. The format is "if/when + present tense, present tense". The first conditional talks about real situations in the future that are possible. The format is "if + present simple, will". The second conditional communicates a present or future hypothetical situation. The format is "if + past simple, would/could/might + verb base form". The third conditional refers to a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical past result. The format is "if + past perfect, would/could/might + have + past participle". The mixed conditional is a combination of second and third conditional clauses. The format is "if + past perfect, would + verb base form". Just as important is knowing the difference between direct speech and reported speech. All sentences are actual speech, better known as direct speech. Reported speech is taking the information that is direct speech and retransmitting it to a third party.
