What I learned from this lesson is what I feel like has stood out to me throughout all of the grammar lessons - just how complicated teaching English grammar will be! There are so many rules and so many exceptions. I appreciated that this unit considered that teaching phrasal verbs may be best learned as vocabulary items. It would be a good practice for the teacher to try to implement the use of phrasal verbs naturally during uncontrolled practice times in class. If a student is exposed repeatedly then they will hopefully learn them in context and their exposure will increase familiarity and encourage use. This unit also considered modal auxiliary verbs are useful so that a student will learn how to express obligation, possibility/probability, permission/prohibition, ability and advice. These are essential speech forms and it will be beneficial for a student to learn their use well. I found the consideration of the passive voice useful since it is how we often explain matters when the doer of an action is not known, is not important to know or is meant to be concealed. Intricacies in speech, such as these, will help a learner sound more native.
