Essentially the students’ needs and interests should take preference over the teacher, and English should be the prime source of communication. This is true to ensure and encourage the use of the language in the class and ultimately outside of the classroom. Although the teacher has to avoid and discourage students from reverting back to their native language I feel it’s at times required and frankly quite useful to apply it (if you can speak it) in order to explain a task/activity especially at the lower levels. This can save time but care should be taken not to overuse it, thus English should be used as far as possible.
It’s imperative that the teacher is always well prepared and motivated for the task at hand which will enable him or her to handle any potential problem easier. I have learned that knowing the students’ needs and subsequent English ability (beforehand) is tantamount. Lessons and learning objectives should be based around this as well as the needs and objectives of the company in the case of teaching English to business clients.
I feel that you should take an interest in the students themselves and their goals to improve your ability to teach them none more so when teaching monolingual and multilingual classes. A diverse variety of cultures and backgrounds poses unique challenges over and above the language barriers which makes preparation and knowledge of your students more important.
