In this unit, I learned about modals, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. I learned that modal auxiliary verbs express a lot of different ideas such as obligation, ability, and advice. For example, the auxiliary verb need to has the use expressing need or necessity. Auxiliary verbs can change the meaning of the main verb. A teaching idea can be role play, such as pretending to be a doctor. The passive voice is when the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. I was reminded that only transitive verbs are used in the passive form. Auxiliary verb 'be' plus the past participle is the form of the passive sentence. A teaching idea that was suggested in the unit was cutting up varied active/passive sentences and getting students to match them. Relative clauses were also introduced in the unit. A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. The independent clause, dependent clause, and relative or adjective clause were introduced. The relative clause gives further information about a noun. The defining relative clause makes clear which person or thing is being addressed. A non-defining relative clause is not essential to the meaning of the sentence, and the commas in the sentence express that. Finally, phrasal verbs consist of a verb and one or two particles. A particle may be a preposition or an adverb, or an adverb plus a preposition. The type one phrasal verb is the intransitive phrasal verb., but there are also type two or transitive separable and type three or transitive inseparable.
